P037-11 Big River - Shannon Cox
This painting is of a place in the back country of Gooniyandi country called Big River. We go there to go fishing just after the wet season when the floods have subsided. It is a long drive from Yiyili, about two hours. It is a secret spot, not many people know of this place. The old people showed us the way of our country.

P1199-10 Big River - Terry Dawson
Big River is our main fishing spot in the wet or dry season, also known as Oolamarra. When I was a small child my grandmother used to take us to this place. There is big and small Biriwiri there (Bendee tree, has clear gum), we were told not to eat the clear gum from these trees, otherwise we will not catch fish. This tree was used by the old people to make spears. Balga (Barramundi) is the main catch but we also like to catch bream and catfish. I caught my first barramundi when I was a child, from Big River using laarri (Bream) bait.
